Shawn Melchor is less a man of words and more a man of action, of creation. Through his character design and digital art at Disney’s Junction Point Studios, and now Retro Studios, he works with what he calls a “painterly” style to bring a variety of subjects to life. Shawn says it all started with a quarter, a pencil and his mother showing him how to shade a ball. Since then, art has been both a way to relax and unwind and, luckily enough, what he does for a living.
Whether it is in his work for video games (including both Epic Mickey 1 and 2) or his personal works (science fiction often including underwater alien species), Shawn’s style is surreal, yet dark and real. His color palettes are rich, muted and serious. Many of his pieces feature wide-open, mysterious natural scenery influenced by the real world. Shawn is one of the four Austin-based artists. Check out his piece for the In Danger book:
“I’ve always loved the panda. They are one of my favorite creatures. I love the calm and seemingly playful demeanor they have.” - Shawn Melchor
